Duane Powers

Qualifications

Duane earned his law degree from Florida International University College of Law in 2024 as a part-time student while balancing a ten-year career as a truck driver after immigrating to the United States from Kingston, Jamaica, in 2013. While at FIU Law, Duane served as President of the Caribbean Law Students Association, was an active member of the Black Law Students Association and the Criminal Law Society, and competed on the FIU Trial Team.

Following law school, Duane joined the Broward County Public Defender’s Office, where he handled complex misdemeanor and felony cases and conducted over 15 jury trials. Demonstrating exceptional courtroom advocacy, Duane earned the prestigious “Hat Trick Award” in both 2025 and 2026 for securing three consecutive “Not Guilty” jury trial verdicts.

Outside of practicing law, Duane mentors law and undergraduate students through shadowing opportunities, panel discussions, and networking events. He also hosts fish fries for his nonprofit to support schools in Jamaica. In his free time, he enjoys traveling and cooking.

From the cab of a truck to the courtroom, Duane has never forgotten where he came from, and he works continuously to ensure the next generation has a clear path forward. Duane is licensed to practice law in Florida and focuses his practice on workers’ compensation defense in the firm’s Miami office.
